In recent years, Stella has observed a notable distinction emerging among our patients concerning the terms "PTSD" and "Complex PTSD."
This article seeks to clarify this difference as perceived by patients and elucidate Stella's perspective on "Complex PTSD" as a distinct challenge compared to traditional "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder" diagnoses.
Complex PTSD" (C-PTSD) has gained preference among trauma survivors as a term encompassing the intricate challenges they face beyond the confines of conventional PTSD definitions. For many of Stella's patients, C-PTSD resonates with their lived experiences of enduring multiple layers of trauma, encompassing early-life adversity followed by additional traumas in adulthood.
This stands in contrast to classical PTSD diagnoses, typically triggered by a single traumatic event that induces feelings of helplessness or horror. The conventional treatment approach often revolves around identifying and addressing the central traumatic incident, known as the "index" trauma.
However, complex PTSD lacks a clear-cut index trauma. Individuals with C-PTSD frequently display a high ACEs score, signifying adverse childhood experiences such as abuse, neglect, family disruptions, or exposure to violence. Early trauma profoundly shapes an individual's biological and psychological development, influencing attachment styles and personality traits.
While not everyone who experiences early trauma develops personality disorders, it is evident that such experiences can significantly impact personality development and relational patterns.
Stella advocates for this expanded understanding of trauma to de-stigmatise mental health challenges and foster healing for trauma survivors.
